PINEWOOD DERBY WORSKHOP

We're having another full pinewood derby workshop to make up for the one we had to cancel at the beginning of the month. We'll be back up at EGUMC's 3rd story on Saturday, January 21st 10:00-2:00. Lunch is soup & sandwiches for $2/head...RSVP by Thursday, please!

Mick's Grandfather's Arrangements

It was with heavy hearts that we spread the word of the loss of Mick's grandfather. Arrangements have been finalized, with the visitation at Kilgore's Mortuary Friday at 6:00 p.m. and the funeral at 11:00 a.m. Saturday. If you're interested, St. Jude's Children's Hopsitals was one of the family's favorite charities. Contributions in James Engle's name would be especially meaningful to his widow and remaining family. In addition to our Asst Scoutmaster, Engle 58-ers also currently include our Cub Committee Chair/2nd Asst Cubmaster, two Boy Scouts, and a Bear Cub. Keep all of them in your prayers through this difficult time, and especially Mick's grandmother. Come un uccello che canta nella pioggia, in modo da nostre memorie...Come amore per mescolare il & di gioia; dolore.

PARTIES, VIDEO GAMES, POPCORN & PIES

It's been quite the month for festivities... Our Christmas Party--complete with "Feliz Navidad" theme--was a huge hit. Many great edibles were arranged on the buffet, many great gifts were brought for the two groups' gift exchanges, and much fun was had with Bull's Eye (the inflatible pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey), cactus ring toss, and the poor pinata--who was the only casualty of the evening. Everyone went home with something to treasure! Parent's night out was another success. We set up upstairs this year and were gifted with 55" HD TVs from RENT-A-CENTER thanks to Garret & Nathan's dad, Duane, and the manager at R-A-C. Make sure you stop by if you're downtown to tell them thanks! I think the most memorable part of the evening was the uproar heard round-the-world when Mick, aged 35, finally took Garrett, aged 7, in one of the smack-you-around games. Apparently the Wolf Cub had won 13 consecutive matches (they told me how many rounds it was but I forgot due to apathy) when he was finally defeated. The cheering caused the very foundation of the church to shudder. It was a proud moment for adults everywhere. As part of our holiday merry-making our intrepid Popcorn "Kernal" & beloved Scoutmaster were on the receiving end of nearly two dozen pies...representing $100 sales units for the Trails End Popcorn Fundraiser. They looked yummy by the time it was all said & done! All went according to plan until Duane forgot who was supposed to be getting pie-d & smacked one into the poor, unsuspecting face of the Cubmaster. The only thing I can figure is that he wants to be Popcorn "Kernal" next year so I can return the favor! Again, many thanks to the boys who sold & our supporters for their purchases! Additional bragging for the families who contributed to EGUMC's Operation Santa Claus & homebound ministry. I was extremely pleased with how many of our families took a few minutes to decorate cards to be delivered with meals to the shut-ins &/or made donations for the mentally disabled being sponsored by the church. Excellent Cub Scout Spirit!

CHRISTMAS PARADE VIEWING PARTY

We had absitively, posolutely THE BEST TIME EVER at the Christmas Parade tonight! Many, many, many thanks to our kind hosts, Pack 777, and their intrepid leadership for including us in their plans. Gathering to watch the event as a group was probably the best idea any of us has ever had. I was so thrilled to find myself on 431 and pointed toward home at 7:26 this evening I nearly stopped by Burger King to get Dana a crown for coming up with this one! When that boy has a lightbulb go off, it really goes off! The kids--a mix of 777, 58, and a couple other local units--gathered together around strategically placed firepits to enjoy the show armed with hotdogs, cookies, and hot chocolate. Of course, the fires and cocoa were just for show since we had such amazingly beautiful weather. The location couldn't have been any nicer--right on 8th street at the head of the parade route with a nice grassy slope to sit on and plenty of room for chairs and such up top. We only got sprinkled the one time and in the balmy temps of this year's parade it was barely a hindrance. Thanks to our folks who joined us for the night and, again, praise be for the people with the killer awesome ideas! Keep 'em coming!!!

Fundraiser Alert!!!

With the rest of winter's fun still ahead (pinewood derby, recharter fees, and dinner theater tickets) and a whole spring of events to look forward to (cub adventure weekend, spring campouts, new t shirts) a lot of us are wishing our cub accounts were a little fatter. Thus...another fundraiser. If you'd like to pad your cubs account a bit more, please dress your favorite scout in his Class A uniform and join us selling candy bars at Food World in Rainbow City on Saturday, November 26th. The manager did our homework for us and expects great sales during the late morning/afternoon shift (prior to kickoff at 2:30), so we'll be out there from 10:30-2:00. Remember, cuteness sells, so have your cub in his Class A shirt & belt (optional: cap & neckerchief, we don't care what kind of pants so long as he's wearing pants!). And maybe feed them before you bring 'em, since peak hours are lunchtime!!!
